The Rose - Symbol of Passion, LOVE and ROMANCE

Roses are ancient symbols of love and beauty and have long been associated with romance. Indeed, the poet Robert Burns once wrote "my love is like a red, red Rose, that's newly sprung in June". Throughout the centuries, these blooms have been revered for their beauty.

The ancient Greek and Roman goddesses of love, Aphrodite and Venus, were associated with the Rose, while early Christians identified the five petals of the flower with the five wounds of Jesus Christ. They later used it as a symbol for the blood of Christian martyrs, before it eventually came to be used as a symbol of the Virgin Mary.

Interestingly, the Rose was once used in Rome as a marker for secret meetings. This lead to the creation of the phrase "sub rosa", which translates as 'under the rose' and means to keep a secret.
